Personal and Family Background:

What was your first job and how did it prepare you for your current position? 

During high school, my first job was working at an afterschool program with elementary school children. This job taught me how to take an active interest in the welfare of others and sparked my desire to have a meaningful impact on those who I’ve crossed paths with in life.

Medical Training:

How did the diversity (or lack of diversity) in your medical educators shape your training? 

Throughout my training, there were not many medical educators that looked like me but there were a lot of patients who did. This is one of the reasons that continues to motivate me in my chosen career path and to mentor others. 

MFM Practice:

How has your cultural background shaped you as an MFM?

Tell us about one of your most memorable patient encounters. I cared for a patient with a complex medical history who presented at 32 weeks with sickle cell pain crisis. Delivery was recommended multiple times during her antepartum admission and she declined. After taking the time to sit with her and inquire about her decision, she expressed how she didn’t get to enjoy her first delivery experience- not insignificantly, at 32 weeks. She wasn’t able to spend meaningful time with her first baby, which she felt negatively affected her ability to bond. After arranging multiple multidisciplinary discussions with all the specialties involved in her care, we were able to work together with the patient on a delivery plan and helped her to feel more involved in her care.

I’m excited to wake up every day and practice Maternal Fetal Medicine because: it’s an amazing opportunity to take care of such unique and special patients.

If I could solve one problem in MFM it would be: Pre-Eclampsia!

The best day I ever had as an MFM was: when I learned that I matched into MFM fellowship.
